Carlton Johnson discusses the role of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in the cleanup of corruption and crime in Phenix City, Ala. during the 1950s. He talks about threats to himself and other journalists and citizens, the events leading up to the cleanup, the trial of the accused murderer of Albert Patterson, changes in Phenix City since the cleanup, and taped conversations that were reported in the newspaper.
