Masqueray was born in Dieppe, France and studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, 1879-1884. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1887, and worked for Carrere & Hastings for five years, when he joined Richard Morris Hunt's firm and designed Vanderbilt's "The Breakers" in Newport, R.I. Masqueray joined the Warren & Wetmore office in 1897, but left that in 1901 for appointment of Chief of Design of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Cass Gilbert was born on November 24, 1859, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of General and Mrs. Samuel Augustus Gilbert.
