James C. Hardie papers, 1952-2002.

Consists of agendas, annual reports, brochures, budgets, calendars, charts, client publications, correspondence, datebooks, financial reports, forms, grant proposals, invoices, job descriptions, lists, magazine and newspaper articles, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, news releases, notebooks, notes, outlines, photographs, presentations, reports, speeches, statistics, and studies. The collection is of value to researchers studying fundraising, development, and philanthropy in the non-profit sector in the United States in general and in Cleveland, Ohio, more specifically. Those interested in these topics for the latter half of the 20th century will find this collection especially helpful. The creation of new ideas and methods in a relatively new industry can be seen throughout these papers, especially in regard to James Hardie's "top 100" philosophy and his training and placement of development staff within his client institutions. Those with interest in non-profit institutions' capital campaigns, fund raising, institutional development, and bequest and deferred gift programs, especially in northeast Ohio, will find this collection useful. St. Luke's Hospital, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Cleveland Play House, Fairview General Hospital, Hawken School, The Salvation Army, and Vocational Guidance and Rehabilitation Services/Vocational Guidance Services are just a few of the non-profit institutions that were clients of Mr. Hardie. Please consult the inventory for an alphabetical listing of all the entities involved. Also note that Mr. Hardie included in his client files those institutions that he advised on a volunteer basis. Those interested in philanthropy, development, and fundraising in Cleveland in general will also find this collection valuable through the grant proposals from various institutions, the subject files which include many statistics, reports and general information on the development and fundraising field, and Mr. Hardie's Dively Foundation files also included in the subject files. Anyone interested in the formation of development departments at colleges and universities in the second half of the twentieth century will find this collection of note as will those interested in the role of corporate funding of higher education. The CWRU files and Corporate 1% for Higher Education files, among others, will be interesting here as will be the American College Public Relations Association files included in the subject files series. Also those interested in performance standards for primary education will find the Yardstick Project files interesting. All photographs have been retained in this collection due to their integral nature in understanding the corresponding manuscripts.
