George Harrington letters relating to his voyage to California during the Gold Rush 1849-51.

Four manuscript letters describing Harrington's voyage around Cape Horn to California and his subsequent experiences in the gold mines. The letters were written at sea, from San Francisco or from Long Bar mining camp on the Yuba river. He describes the port towns visited en route to California, including Valparaiso, Santa Catarina, Brazil, as well as the situation in San Francisco. He also gives a generally positive report from the mines with reference to Jackass Gulch. The letters are addressed to Jacob C. Hawley of Burlington, Vermont, and include their original postmarked mailing envelopes.

George Harrington, born in Minnesota in 1883, earned his engineer's degree from the Minnesota School of Mines in 1912. He was a geologist with Standard Oil in Argentina from 1921 to 1943. He retired to Palo Alto in 1943; after the war he became a research associate to Stanford paleontologists Myra Keen and Hans Thalman. His daughter Jane Harrington Jones, Stanford class of 1941, established the George L. Harrington Faculty Scholar Fund in his honor. From the description of George Har...
