Anne Passmore writing sheet, 1730.

ArchivalResource

Anne Passmore writing sheet, 1730.

This leaf, with an engraved border, consists of four medallions depicting the biblical story of Jonah in the corners; two framed images of young students, a boy and girl, wearing charity-school attire, appearing on the sides; and an elevation of a school building at the bottom. This sheet was used for students, like Anne Passmore, to practice writing while learning a specific subject. A handwritten poem of the life of Jonah fills the center of the sheet; the first four lines are from Francis Quarles' Argument that begins his poem "A Feast for Worms." Passmore has decorated the borders of the poem with calligraphic flourishes, some in the form of birds.
