Douglas Volk correspondence and contracts, 1912-1913.

This collection is comprised of documentation related to artist Douglas Volk's commission to paint the mural "The Coming of the White Man" for the Polk County Courthouse, Des Moines, Iowa. It includes correspondence between Volk and other persons involved in the courthouse art project--Daniel Linane (a Des Moines interior decorative designer) and artists Russell Cowles and Charles Atherton Cumming; contracts and specifications for the mural; and a photo of the courthouse interior wall where the mural was to be installed. The letters reveal the exchange of ideas among the artists as the mural was conceptualized and executed, and the response on its completion in 1913. In addition to the correspondence mentioned, there is a letter from Iowa governor George W. Clarke answering Volk's inquiry about the state's plans for capitol grounds extension, and a letter from the Fort Dodge Federation of Arts acknowledging receipt of an Abraham Lincoln painting by Volk.
