Liang family papers, 1911-1937.

Correspondence between Tun Yen Liang and Martin Welles, as well as correspondence between Che Chiang Liang and Welles. Tun Yen Liang was part of the first contingent of students in Hartford's Chinese Educational Mission. He entered Hartford Public High School in 1874 and was part of the Yale class of 1882. Liang maintained a friendship with Martin Welles of Hartford, Connecticut. Letters in this collection are from Liang during the time his son, Che Chiang Liang, was a student in Connecticut. The letters between Che Chiang Liang and Welles are from both his time here and later when he was back in China. While attending The Sanford School in Redding Ridge, Connecticut, Che wrote to Welles about winning a football game. After Tun Yen's death in 1924, Welles helped with the estate settlement by selling the Liang's house in Bethesda, Maryland, and closing a bank account in Connecticut. In copies of his own letters, Welles provided details about changes in his family.
