J. Dwight Whitney papers, 1888-1917.

The papers of Josiah Dwight Whitney, first while attending Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, and later when working for the Evening Post in New York. Much of the correspondence is to Katherine Bill, his future wife. Several letters over the years are from a local dealer for Remington typewriters about upgrading Whitney's machine. While attending Beloit College, Whitney was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and wrote a short autobiography for one chapter meeting. He was also a bicycle racer and hosted at least one race at the college. Receipts and letters are included regarding acquiring bicycle parts. Another frequent correspondent is Thomas Riggs of South Dakota. After Beloit, Whitney briefly attended Yale before joining the Evening Post. Some undated letters were sent from Hartford, Connecticut. Katherine's mother, Grace Bill, seems to have spent some time in Branford, Connecticut.
