Whiting and Kilbourn family papers, 1747-1847.

Primarily letters between Nathan Whiting and Mary Saltonstall Whiting before and after their marriage. He referred to himself as Amyntas and she was Delia. Nathan was a military officer in both the French and Indian and the Revolutionary War. When he was called up in 1755, he wrote a poem Mary, and then wrote several letters from the field. His papers also include copies of correspondence regarding the history of the Whiting and Saltonstall families, originally written in 1766. Mary is represented by a letter from her mother, ca. 1779, and a number of missives she wrote to Nathan while he was serving with the Continental Army in 1782. Nathan's father died when Nathan was just a child and he was raised by his sister Mary Clap; there are two letters to Mary in the collection, 1749, 1767. The other Whiting family member in the collection is Samuel, and his papers include a guardianship document, 1809, a deed, 1810, and a two dollar bill printed by The Bank of Niagara in 1827. The relation of the Kilbourn family to the Whitings is unclear. Among the family members represented are Ogden Kilbourn, whose penmanship and drawing skills are well represented, Joseph Kilbourn of Glastonbury, and Austin Kilbourn of Hartford, Connecticut. Interesting among the assorted items in the collection are two fragments of documents related to Yale College, a hand written proclamation by Governor Thomas Fitch, 1757, and an incomplete military commission signed by him, accounts between the State and the Army, 1781, and a circular letter regarding the Whig party, 1836.

Nathan Whiting was an Army officer and politician. He served in King George's War (1744-1748) and the French and Indian War (1755-1763), and was a representative of New Haven, Connecticut, in the General Assembly, 1769, 1770.
