Includes snapshots, portraits and press photographs taken of George Atcheson, Jr. throughout his career, including during his service in pre-World War II China and post-World War II Japan. Also includes photographs of associated figures such as Douglas MacArthur, Chiag Kai-shek, Patrick J. Hurley and Harry S. Truman; as well as numerous photographs of Atcheson's son George Atcheson, III taken throughout his life, including while a student at the University of California, Berkeley and while serving in the military during the Korean War. Also includes commercial photographs and postcards of views taken in China and Japan; a set of postcards reproducing woodcut prints of Hiroshige; and a cigarette case owned by George Atcheson, Jr.

Denver-born George Atcheson, Jr. entered the State Department as a student interpreter at the Peiping Legation and specialized in Far Eastern affairs. As second secretary of the Nanking Embassy, he was aboard the gunboat Panay when it was bombed and sunk by the Japanese in 1937.
