Arthur H. Webber pattern book, 1898-1899.

Lowell Textile School pattern book issued to Arthur H. Webber, of 29 Kirk St. Lowell, Massachusetts. Webber used the book as he learned the process of designing and manufacturing woven textile products. Entries are dated from November 8, 1898 to April 18, 1899 but subsequent entries are undated. Each of the 21 patterns for cotton, woolen, worsted and linen blends include handwritten details associated with the pattern such as the name of the pattern, threads in pattern, patterns in warp, threads in warp, picks per inch, etc., and are accompanied by a swatch, thread samples, diagrams or weaving drafts and often a printed label completed in manuscript. Following the patterns are three leaves with 39 hanks of dyed textile fibers, each labeled with the name of the dye. Laid in at the rear of the book are 44 hand-drawn and hand-colored diagrams or weaving drafts mounted on three plates along with an exercise book dated May 31, 1899.

Arthur H. Webber was a student at the Lowell Textile School in 1898 and 1899. The Lowell Textile School was established in 1895 by an act of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Court "for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a textile school for instruction in theory and practical art of textile and kindred branches of industry" and formally opened in 1897.
