An immigrant from Poland, Harry Engelman (b. 1909) was a social worker who began his career in the New York City Department of Welfare in 1938 and, after a move to the West Coast, received his MSW from the University of Southern California (1961). He would later lecture in the School of Social Work at USC, and was a long-time worker in the California Department of Social Services, where he served as a referee, among other things.
