Joseph M. Cataldo was born March 17, 1837 in Terrasini, Sicily. His youth was marked by frail health and multiple family relocations particularly in response to the 1848 pan-European political turbulence, felt in Sicily as well. In 1852, at the ripe age of 15, he petitioned to join the Sicily Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), based in nearby Palermo. John B. Monteith and Charles E. Monteith, Indian agents for Fort Lapwai, were both sons of the Reverand W. J. Monteith who settled at Lapwai as a missionary. John Monteith was appointed as Indian Agent to the Nez Perce at Fort Lapwai in 1871. Monteith sided with the "treaty" Nez Perce, and supported moving Chief Joseph's band to his reservation leading up to the Nez Perce War.
