Edward Stanley Journal, 1838-1843 and 1848.

Journal kept by Bishop Stanley of his daily activities during his reorganization of the work of his diocese. Entries contain both praise for and criticism of clergy and teachers as well as reflections upon the responsibilities of his office. The journal documents his interest in the education of the poor and includes evaluations of "infant schools" (orphanages) and schools for the poor. Stanley also recorded where he stayed and with whom he dined, often adding numbered charts to indicate seating arrangements. Stanley frequently included a brief census of some of the schools he visited and recorded school mistresses' salaries and criticism of conditions. In his entry dated April 20, 1840, Stanley described dining at Marlboro House with Queen Dowager Adelaide, Princess Augusta, Lord Howe, and the Duchess of Saxe-Weimar.
