Officer, 7th Cavalry. Killed at Little Bighorn. Letter, Petersburg City, Va., 20 April 1865, to his parents telling of conditions, his health and lamenting Lincoln's death. Cooke speculates on the surrender of the South and asks his parents to send him newspapers; letter, Fort Hays, 20 April 1867, to his mother describing a raid on an Indian camp led by General Custer. At the time of Cooke's writing Wild Bill Hickok had been sent back to Hancock with a report while the troops awaited further orders from Hancock. In closing Cooke promises "I will send you the first scalp I take with my own hands."

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania. According to family letters, Custer was named after George Armstrong, a minister, in his devout mother's hope that her son might join the clergy.
