The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and saw extensive combat duty in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the atom bomb in July 1945, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. James Vincent Forrestal (February 15, 1892 – May 22, 1949) was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense. Journalist. Born in Australia, Mr. Donald was a newsman in China from 1904 until World War II. Mediator of the Sian Incident in 1936, he was also adviser to Chang Hsueh-liang of Manchuria and later to Chiang Kai-shek and Mme Chiang. Subsequent to Pearl Harbor, he became interned in Manila for three years. After a brief visit to New York City in 1945, he returned to Shanghai, where he died in 1946.
