William Clark scrapbook and Wide-Awakes correspondence, 1862-1925.

The scrapbook created by William Clark documents his career in the insurance industry with Phoenix Insurance and later Aetna Insurance, both in Hartford, Connecticut. The clippings in the volume also cover stories of general interest, hot air balloons and 4th of July celebrations, deaths of individuals named Clark or Braddock, and his activities in politics, particularly the Wide-Awakes. There are numerous items announcing the retirement of Thomas Day from the Hartford Courant, who turned operation of the paper to his partner Abel N. Clark. The collection also includes loose items never affixed to the scrapbook, and a series of letters from individuals who were joining the Wide-Awakes for a trip to Washington, DC in March 1889 for the inauguration of Benjamin Harrison.
