Nguyễn Kim was born in Vietnam to a wealthy family. She attended a French school in Vietnam, then the Sorbonne. She taught Vietnamese at the Defense Language Institute Southwest Branch near Fort Bliss, Texas, and worked on General William Westmoreland's staff in Vietnam. She later settled in Shreveport, La.
