Hard family papers, 1834-1973.

The collection consists primarily of correspondence (1834-1913) among members of the Hard and Eyles families (Elizabeth and Dr. Hanson Hard and their descendants), and comprises largely family and travel news from wide-ranging locations including Ohio, New York, Philadelphia, and DeLand, Florida. Also contains related documents such as a book of poetry by Coralinn Hard Eyles; obituaries for many of the correspondents; legal papers; and genealogical material on the Hard, Eyles, and Newcomb families. Specific areas documented are Elizabeth Hard's early life in New York and young motherhood, including her loss of two infant children, and Civil War news. In a letter dated September 26, 1861, William Eyles expressed his support of John C. Fremont and described a new type of musket ball. In the same letter he stated that Union soldiers should be able to take slaves used by Confederate soldiers and "do with them as we please." In a letter dated March 11, 1863, S.F. Hard wrote about gold mining in Idaho. A typescript account of Dr. Hanson Hard's experiences as a prisoner of the Confederate army (covering a stint at Andersonville prison) is also included.
