Two papers documenting efforts of planter Joshua Nicholls to secure funding to continue his farming operations in Colleton District, S.C. Letter, 18 Feb. 1850, sent from J[oshua] Nicholls in Walterboro (Colleton County, S.C.,) to David Stocking (Charleston, S.C.), discussing cotton and other crops and requesting a loan to extend planting interests. [This is in the same handwriting as the following document.] Mortgage of personal property, 14 Jan. 1852, conveying to William C. Heyward of Charleston, S.C., 18 African American slaves identified by name, held by Joshua Nicholls of Colleton County, S.C. in order to secure a loan. [Although the clerk spelled Nicholls's name with a single L on this document, the signature shows the spelling, "Joshua Nicholls."]
