Letter, September, 1849.

Autographed letter signed, September 1849, USS Ohio, San Francisco, CA. Addressed to Almy's sister whose brother-in-law, Senator John P. Hale was sponsoring a bill in the Senate to end corporal punishment in the Navy. Almy opposes this, as he feels flogging is necessary to discipline sailors and to ensure the safety of officers. He asks his sister to use her influence with Senator Hale on this matter as without it conditions on warships would be impossible. He cites her recent experience on a naval vessel.
