Kenneth Burke letters to Henry W. Sams, and manuscripts, 1953-1976.

The collection consists primarily of twenty-four letters written by Kenneth Burke to his friend Henry W. Sams and two manuscripts inscribed to Sams, "The First Three Chapters of Genesis" and "Verbal Action in St. Augustine Confessions," essays that form chapters in Burke's book, The Rhetoric of Religion: Studies in Logology (1961; 1970). The letters highlight moments of Burke's life and work and mark several interections in the lives of Burke and Sams. Several of the letters include enclosures, includig poems. Also included are three copies of letters Sams wrote to Burke.
