Cooley family papers, 1890-1966.

This collection consists of personal and business papers of the Cooley family of Louisiana. Included are handwritten and typed correspondence, photographs, drawings, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, printed articles, certificates, transcripts, programs, invitations, a travel scrapbook, and genealogical notes. Correspondents include Captain Le Vere Cooley and Esther Cooley; photographs of the Teche country were made by Stoughton Cooley. Selected materials about waterways, steamboats, and flood control are included, as well as a bound volume of 1935 Civil Works Administration project photographs.

Captain Le Vere Cooley was an early 20th century Mississippi riverman, who operated the steamer "America" from Greenville to New Orleans, and also the "Ouachita". Esther Cooley, Le Vere's daughter, was a home economics teacher at the Natchitoches State Normal College, which later became Northwestern State College. The Civil Works Administration was established by EO 6420-B, November 9, 1933, under authority of the National Industrial Recovery Act (48 Stat. 200), June 16, 1933, to provide relief work for unemployed persons through public work projects.
