This series contains three booklets. The first, "Explorer I" includes pictures of von Braun, Medaris and Pickering. The second, "Space Explorers" dated July, 1958 includes information on Explorers I, II and III. The final booklet "31 January, 1958 Explorer I" includes an introduction by J.B. Medaris and almost 50 pages of congratulatory letters. Dr. Werner von Braun, Technical Director, ABMA, Redstone Arsenal, and Major General John B. John Bruce Medaris (b. May 12, 1902, Milford, Ohio-d. 1990), Major General in the U.S. Army, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1918 and served in France during World War I. He was later commissioned as an officer and served with the 29th and 33rd Infantry Regiments in the U.S. and Panama. Although he resigned from the Army in 1927, he returned to active duty in 1939.
