Space Materials Science and Technology Collection, 1976-1989.

The bulk of the collection consists of reports, correspondence, interoffice memoranda, handwritten notes, Viewgraphs and templates, manuals, product catalogs from various vendors, articles, manuals (government and civilian), publications, drawings, charts, diagrams, patents, theses and pamphlets. This material pertains to various tasks performed by the section. Also the collection contains photographs and negatives of various sizes. Those being the following: Eighty Nine 8" by 10" color photographs; Twenty Nine 8" by 10" black & white photographs; Fifteen 5" by 7" color photographs; Thirty Three 4" by 5" color photographs; Seven 4 ơ" by 3 ơ" black & white photographs; Sixteen 4 ơ" by 5 ư" black & white photographs; Twenty Five 4" by 5" Polaroid black & white photographs; Ten 8 ư" by 14" color photographs; Ninety Six 2" by 2" mounted color slides; One Hundred Twenty 2" by 2" mounted black & white slides; Two 4" by 5" color negatives and Seven 8 ư" by 11" color negatives. The collection is arranged in 1,226 file folders. The File Clerk of the section had filed materials prior to accessioning by the Archives in separate folders. The folders were specifically labeled by subject matter and in turn, placed in alphabetical order. For example, individual task or project material would be placed in alphabetical order, but not intermixed with another. Even though the collection was combined from two separate accessions, the materials were pulled from the same file cabinets within the section. The original order as filed has been retained, although internal evidence in the files indicates the collection was originally a part of a larger numeric-filing scheme, here incomplete. The basis or reason for the whole of the original file scheme not being retained is not known. The rational for removal of files from the original file set therefore, is also unknown. The materials as accessioned lacked any specific internal abstract description, overview or evaluation of the section's activities. Most acronyms used are defined in Part L of Martha Martinez, editor, Abbreviations and Acronyms Guide, JPL 1030-30 Rev. A, May 1980. A copy is available in the repository.
