JPL Photo Captions Collection, 1945-1997.

This collection includes 593 photo captions for various JPL images from the-mid 1940s to the late 1990s, primarily of robotic space flight missions. The missions included Galileo, Hubble Space Telescope, Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS), Mid Infrared Array Camera (MIRAC2), Magellan, Mariner's 4, 8, 9 and 10, Pathfinder, Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C and X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR), Topex/Poseidon, Viking 1 Lander, Viking 2 Orbiter, Voyager's 1 and 2, and Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite/Microwave Limb Sounder (UARS/MLS). Images of early JPL history were also captioned. These captions were produced for JPL still image negatives from the "P" series made by the JPL Photo Lab. In general copies of the images and their associated captions were distributed through the JPL Public Information Office/Media Relations Office. Jurrie van der Woude had the responsibility for creating these captions. The caption data informed the JPL community and the public about the meaning of the images. Many images illustrated mission success as the spacecraft conducted their planetary and interplanetary encounters. Some captions identified date of launch, name of spacecraft and the responsible agency and or agencies. The captions are arranged in numeric order by JPL still image negative number.
