Mariner 7 Pre-Encounter Anomaly Collection, 1969-1970.

The collection consists of a report, entitled "Mariner VII Pre-Encounter Anomaly Analysis, Volume I," Report 605-230, dated April 15, 1970. The report was prepared by Thomas Gottlieb, Chairman, Mariner VII Failure Review Board. The report analyzes each subsystem of the probe, and presents several systems level failure models. The systems analyzed included Space Science, Telecommunications, Guidance and Control, Engineering Mechanics, Propulsion, and Flight Path and Trajectory. Volume II, not present in the collection, contained the raw engineering telemetry data. The watercolor painting and frame, measures 21" x 31". It depicts an ugly, fat, spotted creature with a tail, floating apparently in orbit around Mars, with one hand grabbing the Mariner 7 spacecraft by a solar panel, and the other hand picking its teeth with a toothpick. A bite has been taken out of one of Mariner 7's solar panels. The Earth, represented in the upper right corner, has a question mark above it, presumably the reactions of the JPL scientists. The painting was drawn by contractor artist G. W. Burton.
