The Wallace G. Hayner papers consist primarily of his unpublished manuscript of a history of West Virginia written between 1970 and 1974. Included are documents supporting his research and correspondence concerning the proposed book. Also included in the collection are original poems and other writings, as well as personal papers which reflect Mr. Hayner's interest in civic affairs. Mr. Hayner removed the bulk of this collection in November 1979.

Wallace Garfield Hayner was born on March 5, 1900 at Curry, near Chapmanville, Logan County, West Virginia, the son of John and Ann Lilly Hayner. He was educated at local schools, received a degree in engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology by Correspondence, and graduated from Marshall College in 1924. He taught school at the age of eighteen, worked as a division engineer for the Seaboard Airline Railroad from 1923 until 1927, worked briefly in a coal mine, and in August, 1927, he joi...
