Interview with Sarah Pitts and Brenda Bramlett of Laurens County, S.C.; Pitts was a teacher at Barksdale Narnie School, a rural white school in Laurens County, (S.C). Bramlett was a former student at the school. Pitts attended Ora school, Laurens Elementary, Laurens High School and Winthrop College before teaching; forced to quit for 12 years after getting married; began working at Barksdale Narnie during World War II when there were no men or unmarried women available to teach; Pitts was one of three teachers in the school; Pitts taught 2nd-4th grade and 6th grade math; salary was $60/month; teachers were expected to buy their own instructional material; male students were responsible for maintaining the coal burning stoves; 7th grade students were responsible for janitorial duties at the school; teachers took turns leading chapel once a week; Bramlett attended from 2nd-4th grade and was in Pitts's class.
