Letter 1861.

Letter written by Henry P. George to Wisconsin Governor Alexander W. Randall offering to produce ammunition at the shot tower in Helena, Wisconsin for the Wisconsin troops during the Civil War. In the letter, dated April 30, 1861, Henry inquires if the troops need ammunition and offers the use of the shot tower to help in production. He offers to provide all the raw materials necessary for ammunition production and suggests that the state only pay for mining costs. Henry P. George, originally from New York, worked for C.C. Washburn & Co. and managed the shot tower in Helena. A transcript of the letter and historical information on the shot tower are also included.

Alexander Williams Randall (1819-1872) was educated as a lawyer. He served as Republican governor of Wisconsin, 1857-1861, and was U.S. Postmaster-general, 1866-1869. He appears to have been executor of the will of Elizabeth Gamble Wirt, wife of William Wirt (1772-1834). Elizabeth Gamble Wirt, daughter of William and Elizabeth Wirt, married Admiral Louis Malesherbes Goldsborough who was a prominent figure in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.
