An authentic incident, Battle of Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, 1908?

Poem printed on a poster tells the story of John Moore Nicholls of Spartanburg (S.C.), a Confederate soldier in Company H, 1st SC Infantry Regiment, who risked his life to bring water to a mortally wounded enemy officer on the battlefield in May 1864. The poem, which gives his name as "John K. Nicholls," was published in the Seventh Regiment Gazette (a publication of the 7th New York Infantry Regiment), and reprinted in a Kentucky newspaper in 1908.
