Collection comprises literary manuscripts for two nonfiction children's books by American author Dorothy Nafus Morrison: The eagle and the fort (1979), a biography of John McLoughlin, the chief factor and developer of Fort Vancouver for the Hudson's Bay Company; and The ladies were not expected (1977), a biography of Abigail Scott Duniway, a leader of the women's suffrage movement in Oregon.

Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. A writer, newspaper publisher, and promoter for women's rights, Abigail Scott Duniway was Oregon's strongest voice for the cause of woman's suffrage. Born Abigail Jane Scott in 1834, she left Illinois for Oregon with her family in 1852, where she met her husband Ben Duniway. The couple settled in Yamhill County, but because of financial difficulties and Ben's permanent injury in a wagon accident, they had to sell their land.
