Virginia Lee Burton papers, ca. 1937-1962.

Collection comprises sketchbooks, preliminary sketches, and final illustrations for several books by American illustrator and author Virginia Lee Burton and others, including, Calico, the wonder horse, or the saga of Stewy Slinker (1941), by Burton; The fast sooner hound (1942), by Arna Bontemps and Jack Conroy; Choo choo, the story of the little engine who ran away (1937), by Burton; Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel (1939), by Burton; and The emperor's new clothes (1949), by Hans Christian Anderson. Also included are the proofs for the book Life story (1962). The collection offers insight into the process of book illustration, from initial sketch to published book.
