Alexandra was born December 1, 1844, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her family had been relatively obscure until 1852, when her father, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, was named successor to the Danish throne. At the age of sixteen, she was chosen as the future wife of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, the heir apparent of Queen Victoria; the pair married in 1863. Many of the letters date from 1869-1876, when Alice was suffering from depression while living with Robert and Rebecca Blackwood in Northville, Michigan, and Frank's Aunt Mary in Coldwater, Michigan, while Frank was on the frontier with Nelson A.
