Ralph G. Newman papers, 1938-1998.

Correspondence, pamphlets, photocopies of historical documents, photographs, and manuscripts of publications of Ralph G. Newman, an historian, manuscript dealer and appraiser, and author based in Chicago and specializing in the Civil War era. Includes working files on the operation of the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop; Ralph Geoffrey Newman, Inc., and the appraisal of manuscripts for clients; and topical files on the Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission (which Newman chaired), Illinois Commission for the New York World's Fair of 1964-65, Illinois State Historical Society, Chicago Historical Society, Lincoln Memorial University, Lincoln College, Ford Theatre Society, Lincoln Academy of Illinois, Civil War Round Table of Chicago, and Montgomery Ward Company's centennial history projects. Includes 2 volumes: a guest book containing comments and signatures by visitors, including Carl Sandburg, who attended book-signing parties and other events at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, 1944-1991. The guest book (in matching slipcase) is bound in red leather with the spine label: Marginalia: By the Friends of Ralph Geoffrey Newman (9 1/2 x 8 x 1 3/4 in.). The second volume is a copy of The Civil War Round Table: Fifty Years of Scholarship and Fellowship, by Barbara Hughett (1990), signed by the author and members of the Civil War Round Table and presented to Mr. Newman on his 80th birthday, Nov. 3, 1991. Volume is housed in a blue cloth-covered slipcase. Includes a chronological card file compiled by Glen Wiche that identifies important events in Newman's life and refers to items in the collection that relate to them.
