Biographical sketch re life of R. Beverly Herbert (1879-1974), written by his daughter; R.B. Herbert studied law at both South Carolina College and the University of Virginia; worked in Scotland for the S.C. Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Immigration,1904; became president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, 1911; negotiated the consolidation agreement that lead to the creation of the South Carolina National Bank, 1924, served as director of the S.C. Nation Bank and its predecessor, the Carolina Bank of Columbia from 1925-1965; elected to S.C. House of Representatives, 1928-1932; ran unsuccessfully for governor, 1930; ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate against Strom Thurmond, 1960. Supported the early civil rights movement; represented an African American man in a 1906 case that went to the Supreme Court and was decided in Herbert's favor, making it illegal to put a man in prison for debt; wrote an article entitled, "Lifting the dark cloud," in 1924 about race relations; advocated that African Americans be allowed to vote in the S.C. Democratic Primary, 1943; wrote and printed the pamphlets: "What can we do about the race problem?" Essays notes Herbert's experiences farming in South Carolina and Virginia, his investments in the pulpwood industry in South Carolina; and involvement with raising of cattle and cultivation of grain in Virginia.

R.B. Herbert (1879-1974) was a lawyer in Columbia, S.C.; native of Fauquier County, Va. In 1897, Herbert settled in Columbia, S.C., studied law at the University of South Carolina (then South Carolina College) and graduated in 1899; soon thereafter he married Georgia Rucker Hull, of Augusta, Georgia, a union that produced four children.
