Beckwith family papers, 1767-1972.

Papers (1767-1892) chiefly containing legal and financial records which appear to have no direct connection with the Beckwith family; Beckwith family papers (1825-1871), chiefly papers of/or relating to Dr. Josiah Gale Beckwith. Of note is his correspondence with brother George Beckwith in which he discusses business dealings and events of the day, his account books documenting certificates of exemption he granted during the Civil War in 1862, records relating to his business affairs, and his medical and drugstore ledgers as well as early records relating to the Alsop family. Seymour family papers (1814-1886) contains a small group of materials relating to Jane Seymour Beckwith, her mother, Mabel Strong Seymour, father, Moses Seymour, Jr., and sister Delia Seymour. Also includes collection of bills (ca. 1870-1920) directed to the Beckwith family, arranged alphabetically by sender documenting the types of goods and services offered by Litchfield county businesses and institutions and the consumption habits of the Beckwiths. The unprocessed portion of the collection (ca. 15 linear ft.) includes correspondence, account and ledger books, scrapbooks, estate papers, deeds, diaries and notebooks, photographs, architectural drawings and records relating to the Beckwith Block and other materials. These papers, chiefly relate to the second Dr. Beckwith (Josiah Gale Beckwith, 1838-1911), and include his ledgers and account books; Ann Alsop Beckwith; Charlotte Coopernail Beckwith; Sutherland Beckwith; J. Gale Beckwith (1874-1957); and Margaret Beckwith. Other papers, to a lesser extent, relate to other Beckwith family as well as materials pertaining to members of the Seymour family, including George Seymour and Henry Seymour. Collection also includes extensive genealogical information and family papers compiled by Dr. George Coopernail, father-in-law of Sutherland Beckwith. Persons represented include Tapping Reeve and members of the Granniss family.
