Isaac Bennett family papers, 1728-1879.

Correspondence between members of the Bennett family of Hampton, Connecticut, as well as summons, writs and testimony collected or signed by Isaac and William Bennett as justices of the peace; William's tax assessments; bills and financial memoranda; school compositions and debating questions; a memorandum book in which the proceedings of the May 1807 session of the General Assembly were recorded; and a list of scholars for a school district in Brooklyn, Connecticut, 1850. A 1728 writ of execution signed by Isaac sentenced a man to eight stripes on his naked body at the Hampton whipping post. In one letter William wrote to his sister Fidelia in 1832, he mentioned having been in Washington, DC, where he saw "Old Hickory" and heard a speech by Daniel Webster. An 1847 letter from Parmelia Root in Wisconsin to Mrs. Harriett Bennett in Hampton, Conn., mentioned homesteading.
