Henry C. Deming journals and notebooks, 1833-1872.

A collection of journals and notebooks kept by Henry C. Deming of Connecticut. One printed volume includes Deming's Valedictory Oration delivered in 1836 at Yale College. Three pocket ledgers contain news clippings and notes by Deming about situations, primarily the Civil War, slavery, and civil rights. A private journal dates between 1833 and 1840; Deming began the journal his sophomore year at Yale. A scrapbook (in very poor condition) contains newspaper clippings from the 1850s and 1860s, including notice of Col. Henry C. Deming's death in 1872. Lastly, a volume with a clasp contains family history. The two volumes not housed in the box are a Bible and a notebook with handwritten essays on a variety of topics.

The Linonian Literary Society was founded in 1753. All undergraduates were allowed to be members of the Linonian Society.
