The Martyrs of Yesterday film stills photographs collection is comprised of 47 black-and-white photographic prints photographed during the production of a silent-era film, The Land of the Setting Sun (also known as The Martyrs of Yesterday). The film, written and directed by Raymond Wells, is set in pre-statehood Oregon Country and depicts events surrounding the Whitman Massacre, during which fourteen early settlers, including missionaries Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa, were killed by members of the Cayuse and Umatilla tribes at the Waiilatpu mission. Historical figures depicted in the stills include Narcissa Whitman, Alice Whitman, Chief Tiloukaidt, Ed Tiloukaidt, and Nathan Kimball. Actors shown in the film stills include J. Barney Sherry, Grace Lord, and Jean Hersholt. The film was shot in Oregon City and Portland in 1919. The collection is unprocessed.
