Vedder writes to My dear sir [Alex'r G. Groat], 6 Dec. 1839, thanking him for his letter, with news of his health, accepting an invitation to a gathering, but declining the chair, suggesting that as a civil servant he must remain politically neutral, and commenting on the difficulties of starting a weekly periodical. David Vedder was born in Orkney, Scotland, and home schooled; orphaned at twelve, he went to sea, first as a cabin boy, later as captain of a whaler and first officer of an armed cruiser. He became a tide supervisor for various ports in Scotland. Vedder began writing poetry at an early age, and published individual poems and collections of verse throughout his life.
