The collection consists of two items: letter to My dear Mrs. M., one of his daughters, 16 May, no year, with news of his activities, mentioning the publication of his second work on Pope, circa 1782; also, prospectus for a four-part history of Grecian Roman, Italian, and French poetry, circa 1784, apparently never published under this title.

Joseph Warton was an influential author and critic, a literary radical who encouraged the use of imagination and eschewed traditional verse forms in his criticism and his own writing. Warton was born in Surrey, and educated at Oxford University, where he developed an interest in poetry and imagination; he began publishing verse soon after, and literary essays on figures such as Milton, Shakespeare, and Pope.
