O. O. Howard letters to S. S. McClure [manuscript], 1890, 1893.

In a letter 1890 October 9, Howard notifies MClure that he beginning "Indian chiefs" starting with Antonio Azul of the Pimas whose connections to Montezuma he will demonstrate. He will also give an account of Montezuma. He requests that copyright is reserved to him. On October 13 he agrees that McClure's suggestions for changes will make better story. In a letter 1893 January 9 Howard encloses a story by his former teacher George D. Beck and requests that McClure publish it and pay Beck. In a letter 1894 February 22, Howard responds to McClure's queries on addresses of Union generals Wager Swayne, Horace Porter and Ely S. Parker, as well as Colonel Fred Grant who could give "choice reminiscences."

Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19.
