Joshua Gilman Hawkes letters, 1862-1863.

This collection consists of transcriptions of 21 of 30 letters from the Joshua Gilman Hawkes Papers. Specifically, they are the letters written by Hawkes from Louisiana between October 7, 1862 and July 8, 1863. They describe his encampment in Baton Rouge in January-March, participation in the Teche campaign of April-May, and the siege of Port Hudson in June-July 1863. He comments on camp life, slavery, African-American soldiers, and other observations of Louisiana during the war.
