Hilda Coulter talks about her involvement in citizens' efforts to clean up the crime and corruption which was rampant in Phenix City, Ala. until the mid-1950s. She first became involved with school issues such as the lunchroom program and textbook program, and then became involved in the Russell Betterment Association Auxiliary. She describes the activities of the women's auxiliary, including election oversight and their radio program. She discusses her interaction with Albert Patterson, her perspectives on his assassination, and her role in the trial. She also describes the involvement of local newspapers in the cleanup and shares her thoughts on how her involvement affected her personally and the current state of affairs in Phenix City.
