The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. In 1902 three younger du Pont cousins: T. Walter O. Simon was born at Philadelphia on March 28, 1906, and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1927. He joined E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in April 1928, working first as a chemist in the Explosives Dept. and between 1936 and 1940 in the Acids Division of the Ammonia Dept. at the Belle Plant.
