The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. Walter O. Simon was born at Philadelphia on March 28, 1906, and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1927. He joined E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in April 1928, working first as a chemist in the Explosives Dept. and between 1936 and 1940 in the Acids Division of the Ammonia Dept. at the Belle Plant.
