Sanford family papers, 1814-1868.

Ledger, correspondence, and other papers, of Daniel Sanford relating to his general store in Cornwall, Vt., the sale of stone to Rutland and Burlington Railroad; involvement with Cornwall School District No. 5 and Social Library Company, a local lending company, and to his service as justice of the peace, including an appeal from an unwed mother (1825) and as lister; letters (1814-1864) from Daniel's brother Jonah Sanford in Hopkinton, N.Y., regarding business and family matters; letters from Daniel's son, Ozias Sanford, chiefly written during the Civil War, including his participation at the Battle of Gettysburg; letters from other family members, including one from Daniel's sister, Nancy (Sanford) Andrews pleading for help getting brother Alanson out of an insane asylum (1846 May 24), and some from Daniel's son, Benjamin Franklin Sanford who moved to Galesburg, Ill.

Daniel Sanford served as an orderly at the Battle of Plattsburgh, then kept a general store in Cornwall, Vt., between 1816-1826. In 1819 he seems to have dealt in clothes. Between 1826 and 1853 he traded in cattle, sheep, and furs, as an agent for other people. From 1849 to 1850, he sold stone for the railroad that was being built in the area. He was active in civic affairs, running the Social Library Company in Cornwall, a local lending library, in 1819. He was involved with School District #5 ...
