Collection includes: Correspondence, diaries, time books, account books, memorabilia, travel documents, legal documents, writings - including manuscripts of John Leach's book "Oxbows and Barefeet" and other miscellaneous personal and business papers, ca. 1886-1980. consist of: one (1) box of papers of John R. Leach, ca. 1952-1975 (bulk ca. 1961-1970). Contains mostly news clippings and personal reminiscences regarding Leach's life and activities, including his work with the YMCA, the Junior Rose Festival, and his historical writing. Includes letter (TLs), dated March 28, 1963, from Justice William O. Douglas; photographs of Leach and his collection; and typescript of his autobiography (including copies of photographs) detailing his childhood in Heppner and eastern Oregon. consist of thirty six (36) envelopes containing letters and other writings of John R. Leach, sent to Mr. and Mrs. Leigh and Jean Whitford. Also includes one clipping and two loose letters.

Lilla Irvin Leach (1886-1980) was a field botanist who specialized in Oregon flora from 1915-1945. She discovered more than a dozen species and two new genera, Kalmiopsis leachiana and Bensoniella oregana. Lilla and her husband John Roy Leach (1882-1972) purchased a tract of land in southeast Portland where they developed a botanical garden named Sleepy Hollow. John R. Leach was born in 1882 in Weston, Oregon. He graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1906. He was a Portland pharmacist and founder of the SE Portland chapter of the Chamber of Commerce. Lilla Leach (John R. Leach's wife) was born in Barlow, Oregon around 1886. She graduated from University of Oregon in 1908. She taught botany in Eugene and discovered 15 plant species over her lifetime. In 1913, she married John R. Leach.
