A collection of papers related to the Hendee family of Hebron and Hartford, Connecticut. Primarily the papers of Lucius J. Hendee, the earliest pieces relate to Revolutionary War pensions. There are also many documents concerning bounty lands available through the Pension Office. Lucius Hendee worked for a period of time with his uncle, Abner Hendee, an Aetna Insurance agent. This introduction to the insurance industry would serve him well. In 1861 Lucius Hendee was elected Secretary of Aetna. Five years later he became the President. As the papers indicate, Lucius Hendee held several positions over the years. He worked as a merchant, selling items such as woolen socks; served as a Notary Public and later as a Justice of the Peace. He was active in politics as well. The papers are arranged in chronological order, with a portion unprocessed. Hendee also held a military position and was involved, in the 1840s, with processing military pensions.
