Ferdinand C. Smith was a native of Germany who settled in Portland, Oregon in the late 19th century. Around 1865 he established an iron works in partnership with his brother Charles Emil Smith. In 1883 the brothers were joined by J. Frank Watson and the firm became the Smith and Watson Iron Works. Smith's grandson, Ferdinand C.
